History of Butterflies and more...

In March 2001 a planning application was made by the Greenholm Partnership to extend the range of goods sold at the Garden Centre (vary 106 agreement) and build a greenhouse for a living exhibition of plants, including The National Collection of Passiflora’s passionflower collection and the passionflower’s invertebrate enemies the Heliconius butterflies at the back of the Roundtree Garden Centre site.

The planning officers were opposed to the application but our local North Somerset Councillors enthusiastically supported the project and it passed through the Council’s planning process in the autumn of 2002.

Unfortunately there were other objections to our planning consent and the matter went to the High Court. Our problems continued and it wasn’t until 2008 that work could finally start on the glasshouse to house the living exhibition, now to be called Butterflies and more....
